Full of fresh and airy white-washed linens, ocean-inspired blues, natural textures and freshly painted white timber finishes, it’s easy to see why this unique design style is quickly becoming an Australian favourite. The Base

The foundation of Hamptons style design is a crisp white palette that delivers a look that is simultaneously modern and classic. Cool and welcoming, a crisp white paint in a low sheen finish is an essential starting point.

When it comes to windows, large areas of glass are essential in order to let in the large amount of natural light that makes this look really come alive. Choose clean aluminium frames or dress them in plantation shutters.

For the kitchen, opt for all white finishes for cabinetry and throw in some areas of open shelving or glass paned doors. Keep benchtops to marble, light-coloured engineered stone or crisp white laminates. Stools drawn up to an island bench are also a must.

The Layers

Timber flooring is the ideal choice when going for the effortless coastal style of a Hamptons feel. Think pale timbers with grey undertones, pure white painted wood or even timber with a white-washed, distressed look.

Layer with rugs in natural fibres or woven with textures of natural cotton and bleached wool. Washed out blue tones also really pop on beautiful timber floors.

If carpet flooring is more your thing, go for natural tones and simple textures that evoke sandy beaches and driftwood.

The Furniture

With a Hamptons style interior, generosity is key to getting the furniture right. When going for a relaxed resort feel for your living room, you should be thinking of deep, overstuffed sofas covered in white or linen slipcovers or have them upholstered in pale neutrals with ticking stripes.

Natural timber or white-painted timber sideboards and side tables help to add an extra element of depth and variation as does the occasional tray table or rattan armchair with plump upholstered cushions.

The Styling

Cushions are an absolute must. Choose ocean-inspired colours like blues, chintz and Chinoiserie and pile them up on your beds and sofas. Texture also plays a big part too, so play around with different high quality linens, jute edges and piping in complementary tones.

Table tops are a great place to introduce task lighting with plain linen shades on stone and glass based lamps. China bowls and coffee table books can add extra flair.

As a general rule for your interior styling, look to a colour palette of white china and pale blue with a touch of driftwood and bleached coral. Decorative sea glass glassware and vases are a great way of adding a touch of understated glamour.

Other things to include throughout your home include blue and white ceramics, light floral pattern and geometric lattice and lace patterns. There are no strict rules, so it’s up to you to judge what works best for each individual space.
